The St. Mary Parish School Board has announced the retirement of Superintendent Dr. Buffy Fegenbush, Ed.D., whose career in public education spans more than thirty years.
Fegenbush began her professional career after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky. She began teaching in St. Mary Parish, where she was recruited to serve as a middle school reading teacher while concurrently earning her middle school certification.
The school board said her demonstrated commitment to student achievement and professional excellence led her into educational leadership. Dr. Fegenbush first served as a school counselor at Centerville High School before assuming the roles of assistant principal at Centerville High School and principal of Berwick High School. She later served as Supervisor of Secondary Education, providing instructional oversight and leadership to secondary schools throughout St. Mary Parish.
After her tenure in St. Mary Parish, Dr. Fegenbush was selected by the Lafayette Parish School System to lead its newly established Transformation Zone, where she guided schools identified as low-performing toward sustained academic improvement. She subsequently returned to St. Mary Parish upon her appointment as Superintendent of Public Schools.
The St. Mary Parish School Board, district leadership, faculty, staff, and school communities expressed their appreciation to Dr. Fegenbush for her service and extended best wishes for continued success and fulfillment in her retirement.
