National Hurricane Center Monitoring Potential Tropical Development in Northwestern Gulf of America

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is continuing to monitor an area of disturbed weather associated with a trough of low pressure currently located over northeastern Mexico.

At this time, the system is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Significant development is not expected over the next 24 hours while the disturbance remains inland. However, forecasters indicate the system could move back over the northwestern Gulf of America late Tuesday or Wednesday, where environmental conditions may become marginally favorable for the development of a short-lived tropical storm between Wednesday and Thursday.

Regardless of tropical cyclone formation, residents and businesses across southern and eastern Texas, as well as portions of Louisiana and Mississippi, are urged to closely monitor the forecast and prepare for the potential impacts of heavy rainfall over the coming days.

Forecasters warn that periods of intense rainfall could lead to widespread, life-threatening flash flooding, urban flooding, and river flooding. In addition, gusty winds and coastal flooding may affect portions of the northwestern Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Watches or Warnings could be required as early as Tuesday if the system shows signs of further organization.

The National Hurricane Center currently assigns the system a 40 percent chance of tropical development during the next 48 hours and a 50 percent chance of development during the next seven days.
