It is with deep sadness that we announce Joseph “Joey” Anthony Carbonell, a lifelong mariner, business owner, and beloved patriarch, passed away on Thursday October 17, 2024 surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a rich legacy of hard work, laughter, and love.
Joey began his career on the water at just 15 years old piloting boats and carving out a name for himself in the maritime industry. He spent his early years as a shrimper on his cherished boat, the Elizabeth Rose, before moving on to a supply boat and later, tug boats. His work ethic extended beyond the water, as he made his start in trucking with a dump truck and eventually grew to a fleet of 18-wheelers. Joey’s work would be balanced between tug boats, 18-wheelers, and his machine and fabrication shop. His professional life was such a big part of his days, and he was blessed to have his children working beside him.
Joey lived a full life, known for his quick wit, funny sayings that came to be known as “Joey-isms”, and the ability to always bring good times to those around him. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by family and friends, particularly his beloved grandchildren, whom he adored.
He is preceded in death by his father, John Constantino Carbonell Sr., and brother, Michael Ray Carbonell Sr.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 25 years, Leah Cedotal Carbonell, his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Keller Carbonell; his children: Rose Carbonell Howard and her husband, Caleb, Elizabeth “Beth” Carbonell, Mason Carbonell, Carissa Moore and her husband, Chisum and his beloved nephew, Raymond Foret and his wife, Kendra. Joey also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren: Riley, Jaxyn, Madelyn, Jhett, Rhett, and Cade, as well as countless family and friends who will carry his memory with love.
Joey lived a life of dedication to his work and his family, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family requests that a time of visitation be observed on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Hargrave Funeral Home. Visitation will resume on Thursday, October 24, 2024, from 8:00 AM until time of services which will begin at 11:00 AM at Hargrave Funeral Home. In keeping with Joey’s wishes, cremation will follow at a later date.
