ST. MARY PARISH, La. — St. Mary Parish Government is urging residents to take precautions against wildfires as breezy winds and dry conditions create a period of high fire danger Friday and Saturday.

According to the parish’s notice, a frontal passage will bring conditions that, combined with very dry vegetation, could allow fires to spread quickly.

The notice says red flag conditions will develop across portions of central and southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas Friday afternoon and evening. Winds are expected to decrease and humidity recover somewhat overnight, before dangerous fire weather conditions return during the day Saturday.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could produce sparks. Anyone towing a trailer should secure safety chains so they do not drag against the pavement.

The parish also reminds residents to report wildfires immediately by calling 911.
