BELLE ROSE — A Napoleonville man faces a felony third-offense DWI charge after authorities say his vehicle crossed into an opposing lane Wednesday evening, forcing a deputy off the roadway to avoid a collision.
Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon said Wendell Joseph Johnson, 66, was stopped on Louisiana Highway 308 after a patrol deputy assigned to the department’s I.C.E. Detail observed his northbound vehicle traveling through a curve in the southbound lane.
During the stop, the deputy reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol on Johnson’s breath and seeing what appeared to be an open alcoholic beverage container inside the vehicle.
Johnson was arrested and taken to the Assumption Parish Detention Center. According to the sheriff’s office, a breath test recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.117%.
Johnson was booked on the following charges:
Driving while intoxicated, third offense
Driving under a suspended driver’s license
Careless operation of a motor vehicle
Possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle
Failure to drive on the right side of the roadway
At the time of Thursday’s release, Johnson remained incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
