BAYOU L’OURSE — An Assumption Parish man faces charges after allegedly threatening a woman with a machete and severely injuring her dog, which later died.

According to Sheriff Leland Falcon, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Andras Street on October 17. The caller reported that Kevin Renard Lightell, 29, of Bayou L’Ourse, was armed with a machete and had attacked her dog.

Deputies detained Lightell upon arrival and located a dog suffering from severe injuries.
The woman told investigators she had been asleep when she awoke to find Lightell standing over her with a machete. She said he attempted to strike her as she fled the bedroom. Lightell then allegedly attacked the dog with the weapon, causing major injuries.

The sheriff’s office reported that the dog died Sunday evening.

Lightell was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, domestic abuse aggravated assault and simple escape. The release did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding the escape charge.

As of Monday, Lightell remained incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
