NAPOLEONVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest of Michael L. Gaines, 67, of 304 Washington Street, Napoleonville, LA, on multiple felony charges arising from an incident in the area of Jefferson and Philosopher Street in Napoleonville on Friday evening.
Uniformed patrol deputies observed what appeared to be illegal drug activity in the aforementioned areas and converged to investigate. While doing so, deputies noted a vehicle parked nearby with an individual seated behind the wheel. The deputy made contact with the individual now identified as Michael L. Gaines. The deputy noted Gaines attempting to place an item on the floorboard. The deputy further noted Gaines to have an open container of an alcoholic beverage. The deputy advised Gaines to exit the vehicle at which time Gaines refused. The deputy then attempted to physically remove Michael L. Gaines from the vehicle. Deputies observed a firearm in the vehicle. Gaines was taken into custody and was found to have drug paraphernalia on his person. The items were seized during a protective pat down search. Deputies noted a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the person of Michael L. Gaines as well as other conditions normally associated with intoxication.
Deputies requested consent to search the vehicle which was granted. During the search of that vehicle, a quantity of crack cocaine was seized.
Deputies secured a search warrant to obtain blood specimens from Michael L. Gaines. The blood sample was obtained from Gaines by medical professionalsat a local healthcare facility.
Michael L. Gaines was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of:
*Driving While Intoxicated – Fourth Offense
*Illegal Carrying of Weapons in the Presence of Controlled Dangerous Substances
*Possession of Crack Cocaine
*Resisting an Officer
*Possession of Alcoholic Beverages in a Motor Vehicle
*Driving Under a Suspended Driver’s License
*Detainer – Louisiana Department of Corrections, Division of Probation and Parole
Michael L. Gaines remains incarcerated pending a bond hearing on the current charges and was ordered held without bond on the probation / parole detainer.
