A dog stranded on an island in the Atchafalaya River, ironically named Dog Island, has been saved and is on the way to a forever home, all thanks to local dog rescue groups and a tour guide. The island is only accessible by boat.

John Burke, the owner of Captain Caviar Swamp Tours, noticed the dog last Friday and  shared photos of her on Facebook, which went viral and caught the attention of Deep South Dog Rescue & Advocacy. They reached out to Villalobos Rescue Center – Life 4 Paws Inc. in New Orleans, who agreed to accept the dog and sent help for the rescue.

On Thursday, Mariah Chock of Villalobos Rescue Center and her beagle Shiloh, along with local rescue volunteers Nadia Breaux, Robert Darce, and Heather Darce arrived at the island equipped with a large trap. They were brought there by John Burke, who pointed out where he had seen the dog and shared some interesting history about the area. Chock was able to secure the dog. The rescue was successful, and the dog was safely returned to shore.

Breaux expressed her joy afterward, saying, “It was an emotional day with the best possible outcome! This girl is safe and already so loved by everyone that’s gotten to meet her. We are so grateful to have played a part in this and getting to her off on her way to a wonderful future.”

Breaux stated that the saved canine will require medical treatment and an ample supply of food, as it is undernourished. Anyone who would like to assist with the dog’s care may donate to Villalobos Rescue Center – Life 4 Paws, Inc.
