The beginning of winter is fast approaching and the Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s Office reminds you of some safety and preventive measures to take when heating your home during the winter.

We’re in the swing of sweater season so they want you to focus on the tried and true of home heating safety tips. The Louisiana State Fire Marshall’s Office reminds everyone to keep in mind these safety tips and share them throughout the community, especially with those who live alone.

?When using space heaters be sure to keep them 3-5 feet from combustible objects like blankets.
?Be sure to plug all heating appliances directly into wall outlets and not power strips or extension cords.
♨️Do not use stoves or ovens to heat homes.
?Don’t overfill fireplaces/wood-burning stoves
?Do not leave candles/open flames (or space heaters) left unattended
?Everyone should make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home!

And don’t forget, Operation Save-A-Life provides free smoke alarm installations for our state’s most at-risk families. If you need help getting a smoke alarm to protect your loved ones, contact your local fire department OR head to lasfm.org to register TODAY!
