A 13-year-old student was arrested Friday after deputies found a loaded handgun at Evergreen Junior High in Houma, according to Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet.
The sheriff’s office says school resource officers received a report that a student might have a gun on campus. Administrators and deputies placed the school on lockdown and searched for the student. Deputies found him in a boys’ bathroom and escorted him to a private area, where they discovered a loaded handgun in his pants.
Investigators say another student reported that the 13-year-old had shown him the gun and threatened to shoot him if he told anyone. Detectives determined the handgun had recently been stolen from a relative’s home.
The juvenile was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Justice Complex on charges including aggravated assault with a firearm, terrorizing or menacing, theft of a firearm, illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile, and carrying a firearm at school. He remains detained pending court proceedings.
Sheriff Soignet said school staff and resource officers acted quickly to secure the campus. The sheriff’s office is withholding the student’s name because he is a juvenile.
