The 2023 Sugar Cane Harvest Season will soon begin locally, and you are reminded to use caution and patience on the roadway during this sugar cane harvest season. As sugarcane grinding season ramps up, farmers will be harvesting and transporting their cane to mills in south Louisiana which means more slow-moving agricultural equipment and 18-wheeler trucks on the roadway.
When you are driving, be aware of slow-moving cane trucks and wagons as well as harvest locations, which are mostly on rural roads. Cane trucks are just like any other 18-wheeler; they make wide turns and start out slowly when entering the roadway.
Drivers are reminded to:
- Leave a few minutes early.
- Slow down – be a little more patient.
- Look for harvest site road signs.
- Keep an eye out for slow-moving vehicles.
- Put your phone down.
