WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) commended House passage of H.R. 6843, legislation adding Lafourche Parish in the boundaries of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. The bill was authored by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and co-sponsored by Congressman Higgins.
The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area stretches across 14 parishes and provides support for the region’s cultural heritage, increases national attention to the area through tourism, and enhances the ecological habitats and wildlife species. The area currently includes St. Mary, Iberia, St. Martin, St. Landry, Avoyelles, Pointe Coupee, Iberville, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafayette, West Baton Rouge, Concordia, East Baton Rouge, and Ascension parishes.
“I’m glad to see legislation expanding the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area pass the House,” said Congressman Higgins. “Lafourche Parish shares the same natural resources and cultural significance as others in the Heritage Area, and I thank Majority Leader Scalise for leading this important legislation.”
