ST. MARY PARISH, La. — The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to strengthen traffic safety enforcement efforts throughout the parish.
Sheriff Gary Driskell announced the grant, which will fund additional enforcement activities aimed at reducing dangerous driving behaviors, preventing crashes and protecting motorists and passengers. The grant period runs from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.
The initiative will focus on addressing several major traffic safety concerns, including impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and failure to use proper occupant restraints.
Sheriff Driskell expressed appreciation to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for its continued support of the department’s traffic safety efforts.
“This grant allows us to fund additional resources focused on keeping our roadways safer,” Driskell said. “Our goal is not to simply enforce the traffic laws, but more importantly, prevent crashes, reduce injuries and ultimately save lives. We appreciate the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission’s investment into the safety of our citizens.”
The sheriff’s office emphasized that roadway safety is a shared responsibility and encouraged motorists to take precautions whenever they travel. Drivers are urged to obey posted speed limits, wear seat belts, avoid distractions, never drive under the influence and remain alert behind the wheel.
Through proactive law enforcement, public education and community partnerships, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting residents and improving safety on parish roadways.
