The Jeanerette Police Department is investigating several serious incidents that took place Saturday, including three separate shootings — one during the city’s annual Mardi Gras parade — as well as an accident involving a child and an ATV operated by a law enforcement officer.
Police Chief Terrance Moore tells KQKI News that gunshots were reported along the parade route Saturday afternoon near Kern Street. During the response to the shooting, Moore said initial reports stated that a child had been struck by a parade float. However, investigators later determined the juvenile was hit by an ATV driven by an officer from a partnering agency.
Moore said a Jeanerette officer was riding along on the ATV, which had its lights and sirens activated, when the vehicle struck the child as he walked toward a float. The juvenile was airlifted to an out-of-area hospital by Acadian Air Med and is reported to be recovering from his injuries. The investigation into that incident has been turned over to Louisiana State Police. No injuries were reported in the parade-related shooting, and a suspect was taken into custody at the scene.
While officers were responding to those situations, additional emergencies unfolded along the parade route. Police reported several medical calls, including a woman who was struck by a vehicle. Moore said investigators believe the incident stemmed from a fight that escalated into what appears to be an intentional vehicular assault. The victim is listed in stable condition, and the case remains under investigation.
Later that day, officers responded to another shooting in the area of Martin Luther King Drive at a local business parking lot. Two confirmed victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are also in stable condition. Authorities received reports of possibly two additional victims, but those have not yet been verified. At this time, no suspect has been identified in that shooting.
Chief Moore released a statement late Sunday afternoon addressing the series of incidents as the department continues its investigations.
“We acknowledge the incident involving a child during the parade. First and foremost, our thoughts are with the child and their family, and we wish the child a full and speedy recovery.
Incidents at large public events are unfortunate and complex. This matter is currently under review to fully understand the circumstances surrounding what occurred. Our officers, along with neighboring partner agencies, were present to maintain order and respond as needed. The incident is being investigated by the Louisiana State Police, and we will allow that agency to conduct and complete its investigation.
Moving forward, our focus is on improving communication and strengthening planning for future events to ensure the safety of our community. This moment calls for clarity, compassion, and a continued commitment to public safety—not speculation or misplaced blame.
Anyone with information related to any incidents that occurred during or after the parade is encouraged to contact us by emailing specialvictims@jeanerette.com.
In closing, we would like to thank all of our law enforcement partners, as well as fire and rescue personnel, for their service and assistance to the City of Jeanerette.”
