BERWICK, La. — The Berwick Fire Department responded early Tuesday morning to a shrimp boat fire along the Atchafalaya River.
Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 1:21 a.m. to Bellvue Front Street near the railroad tracks after receiving reports of a marine vessel on fire.
The first engine arrived within about three minutes and found a large shrimp boat tied to the dock with heavy fire coming from the aft deck.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within approximately 10 minutes before beginning overhaul and an investigation into the cause.
According to the Berwick Fire Department, the fire was determined to be electrical in nature.
No injuries were reported, and officials said there were no environmental concerns or pollutants associated with the incident.
Because the vessel was located in the Atchafalaya River, the U.S. Coast Guard was also notified.
Berwick Fire Department responded with one engine, one service truck and six personnel. Berwick Police and Acadian Ambulance also responded to the scene.
