NEW IBERIA, La. — A New Iberia man has been arrested by the FBI in connection with a national terrorism investigation linked to a foiled New Year’s Eve bombing plot, according to federal authorities.
The arrest is connected to an extremist organization that federal prosecutors say was planning coordinated bombing attacks in Southern California around New Year’s Eve. The FBI confirmed that multiple suspects across the country were taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities allege the group was involved in discussions and preparations related to improvised explosive devices and intended to target various locations. Federal officials said the investigation uncovered communications and materials tied to the alleged plot.
Four individuals were arrested in California in direct connection with the planned bombings. Officials confirmed that the suspect arrested in New Iberia was not accused of participating in the California attacks themselves, but investigators believe he was associated with the same extremist group, prompting his arrest as part of the broader federal operation.
At this time, officials have not released the name of the New Iberia suspect or detailed the specific charges, stating that court proceedings will take place in federal court as the investigation continues. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana is overseeing the case locally.
Federal authorities emphasized that the arrests highlight continued efforts to identify and disrupt domestic extremist threats before violence occurs. Additional details are expected to be released as court documents are unsealed.
All arrested individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
