A Saturday night fire of an abandoned mobile home in Four Corners is being investigated as arson. At 9:58 pm St. Mary Fire District #11 was dispatched to the area of Jones Rd. 1 and Sorrell R.R. Rd. in reference to a mobile home on fire. Upon arrival at 10:01 pm responding units encountered a fully involved structure fire, with heavy flames visible from the center of the structure. The scene was declared under control at 10:12 pm.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing multiple males fleeing the scene in a white vehicle just before the fire was observed. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office was immediately contacted, and the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to assist with the investigation, which remains active.
St. Mary Fire District #11 received automatic mutual aid from Jeanerette Fire Department and Chitimacha Fire Protection, totaling 16 firefighters and seven fire apparatuses that reported to the scene.
St. Mary District 11 Fire Chief Clarence Clark urges all community members to remain vigilant. Clark said, “If you observe any suspicious or unusual activity in your area, please contact the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-828-1960. This type of criminal activity will not be tolerated in our community.”
St. Mary Parish firefighters have been kept busy lately with at least six structure fires reported in the week prior to Saturday’s structure fire in Four Corners, including a second fire in Four Corners after lightning is suspected to be the cause of a fire that resulted in the loss of a church on Wednesday. A total of 50 firefighters from 10 fire departments from as far as Broussard in Lafayette Parish and Cade, which is located in Upper St. Martin Parish, battled the blaze. St. John Baptist Church has been part of the Four Corners Community for 146 years.
