Thibodaux Police Chief Bryan Zeringue reported the apprehension of a sought-after criminal who engaged in a car chase with the police. Jarrel Coleman (35, male) from Thibodaux, Louisiana, faces multiple charges including misdemeanors for Child Passenger Restraint System, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile, Flight from Officer, Fugitive, and four counts of Resisting an Officer. Additionally, he faces felony charges for Illegal Carrying of a Weapon in the Presence of a C.D.S., Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Prohibited Acts – Scheduled IV.
On December 11th, 2023, Thibodaux Police received reports of an unresponsive driver at the Canal Boulevard and Talbot Avenue intersection. Despite finding the car door locked upon arriving at the scene, officers managed to wake up Coleman when they knocked on his window. Coleman immediately fled from the police, embarking on a brief pursuit with an unrestrained two-year-old child in the backseat. The pursuit ended on Iris Street where he resisted officers’ attempts to detain him.
The young child remained unharmed during the incident and was subsequently handed over to a family member present at the scene. Although uninjured, Coleman requested medical evaluation and was transported to a local hospital. A warrant for drug testing was executed due to suspicions of intoxication with results still pending.
In addition to discovering Coleman’s active arrest warrant further into their investigation, police also found drugs and a stolen weapon inside his vehicle following a K-9 search.
Upon medical clearance, Coleman was taken into custody and charged as per his offenses. He is currently detained at Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex with a bond set at $72,250.
