A man from Cut Off was arrested and charged with his second DWI after leading deputies on a high-speed chase reaching over 100 miles per hour. Sheriff Craig Webre from Lafourche Parish reported the arrest of Matthew Carrell, 42, which took place early Sunday morning.

On August 13, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., deputies spotted a pickup truck speeding southbound along LA Highway 308 in Mathews. The truck was traveling at a dangerous 104 mph in a designated 55-mph zone. When deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver, later identified as Carrell, refused to comply and instead accelerated in an effort to evade capture. He ran a red light and dangerously passed several vehicles in no-passing zones before eventually coming to a halt on the 10000 block of LA Highway 308. Carrell was then apprehended by authorities.

Upon closer examination, deputies noticed that Carrell displayed signs of intoxication and discovered an open container of alcohol inside the truck. During the investigation, Carrell aggressively slammed his fist into a desk and approached a deputy threateningly. However, he was quickly restrained without further incident. Carrell refused to participate in a field sobriety test or submit to a breathalyzer test. As a result, deputies obtained a search warrant for his blood sample which was later approved. Furthermore, it was found that Carrell’s license had already been suspended due to a previous DWI arrest.

Carrell was subsequently booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux and charged with aggravated flight from an officer, DWI (2nd offense), possession of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, driving under suspension, speeding, and simple assault. He was eventually released on Sunday evening after posting a $38,000 bail.
