The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division has assumed the lead on an investigation following an incident involving the Berwick Police Department on Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 4:14 PM, officers with the Berwick Police Department responded to a disturbance call on Tournament Boulevard. During the response, a suspect allegedly released dogs to attack the arriving officers. One officer discharged their service weapon, striking and injuring one dog. The second dog was captured safely, and the suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

At that time, the Berwick Police Department called the SMPSO to investigate the incident, and SMPSO detectives responded to the scene and opened an investigation. Detectives believe there is no ongoing threat to public safety, and Tournament Boulevard has been reopened to all traffic.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional details will be released as they become available.
