NEW IBERIA — An incident at New Iberia Senior High School resulted in a parent being taken into custody after allegedly entering the campus without authorization and becoming involved in an altercation with students.

According to the New Iberia Police Department, officers arrested 37-year-old Sabrina Silas following the incident, which occurred Wednesday morning. Authorities said Silas bypassed faculty members to gain access to the campus before the confrontation took place.
Silas was booked on charges of cruelty to a juvenile, disturbing the peace, and unlawful disruption of the operation of a school.

The Iberia Parish School System notified families via email, stating that a parent on campus became involved in an altercation. District officials said school staff responded immediately, the individual was removed from campus, and police took the parent into custody.

Superintendent Heath Hulin said such behavior will not be tolerated, noting that in addition to criminal charges, individuals involved in similar incidents may face bans from all school campuses and from attending school- or district-sponsored activities.

The incident remains under review.
