Mike Ditka, the Hall of Fame tight end and former head coach of the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears, has died at age 86. His family announced his death Friday, October 9. A cause of death was not immediately released.

Known as “Iron Mike” and “Da Coach,” Ditka became one of football’s most recognizable figures. He led the 1985 Chicago Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX, securing his place in NFL history with a team remembered for its dominant defense and colorful personalities.
Louisiana football fans also remember Ditka’s three seasons leading the Saints from 1997 through 1999. New Orleans compiled a 15–33 record during his tenure. His time with the franchise included the widely remembered 1999 trade that sent the Saints’ entire draft class, along with two future picks, to Washington to select running back Ricky Williams.
Before coaching, Ditka starred at tight end for the Bears and later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys. He finished his playing career with 427 catches, 5,812 receiving yards and 43 touchdowns. In 1988, he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In announcing his passing, Ditka’s family remembered him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend whose presence extended far beyond the football field.
