The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office said they are receiving complaints about drivers in school zones dropping off and picking up students with small children who are not properly restrained.
Sheriff Blaise Smith is reminding the public that most car crashes occur within minutes of home. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed that approximately 52 percent of all car accidents occur within a five-mile radius of home, and 69 percent of all collisions happen within a 10-mile radius from home. The implications are that shorter trips closer to home are among the highest for car crashes.
PLEASE take a moment to properly buckle up your little ones even in short trips in your neighborhood. Deputies will be monitoring and citations could be given for those who fail to properly restrain their children.
