FRANKLIN, La. — According to a post on the Cajun Mosquito Control Facebook page, mosquito samples collected in the City of Franklin have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The detection indicates the virus is present in the local mosquito population. At this time, there have been no announced human cases of West Nile virus in Franklin associated with the detection.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites, including using EPA-approved insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors during peak mosquito activity, removing standing water around homes, and ensuring window and door screens are in good repair.
West Nile virus is most commonly spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While many people infected with the virus experience no symptoms, some may develop fever, headache, body aches, or more serious neurological illness.
