BERWICK, La. — A reported shooting on Home Lane in Berwick Wednesday evening turned out to be a hoax, according to the Berwick Police Department.

Officers were dispatched around 6 p.m. after receiving a report of a possible shooting in the area. The Berwick Police Department was assisted by the Morgan City Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office in responding to the call.

After conducting a thorough investigation, authorities determined there was no evidence that a shooting or any other criminal activity had occurred. Investigators also learned the caller intentionally blocked their phone number and knowingly provided false information to law enforcement.

Police emphasized that there was never a threat to public safety.

Officials say false reports divert emergency personnel and resources away from legitimate emergencies and can place both first responders and the public at unnecessary risk.

The investigation remains active, and criminal charges could be filed against anyone found responsible for making the false report.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Berwick Police Department at (985) 384-7710.
