A New Iberia man, identified in court records as Christopher Ledet Jr., has lost his appeal at the Louisiana Supreme Court of his conviction for the second-degree murder of a 22-month-old child in a 2022 case, officials said.
Ledet was originally indicted in October 2022 and later found guilty by a Lafayette Parish jury of second-degree murder on December 13, 2023. The conviction stemmed from the July 21, 2022 death of 22-month-old Kaceston Amire Freeman, who was found unresponsive in a trailer and later pronounced dead. Autopsy results showed blunt force trauma to the head and body, including brain hemorrhaging and internal injuries, consistent with assault.
In March 2024, the court sentenced Ledet to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
Ledet appealed the conviction, arguing that the evidence was insufficient to support a second-degree murder verdict. More recently, that ruling was affirmed by the Louisiana Supreme Court, meaning the conviction and life sentence will stand and Ledet’s appeal has been denied.
