New Iberia Man Charged with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer

NAPOLEONVILLE – Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon reports the arrest Donavar Yancy, Jr., 71, of 4606 Mandy Drive, New Iberia, LA, on multiple felony charges arising from a pursuit situation originating in Lafourche Parish on May 4, 2025, and ended when the suspect Donavar Yancy, Jr. intentionally collided with an Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office patrol unit on LA 1 at the Assumption / Lafourche Parish lines.
Deputies in Lafourche Parish attempted a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle in connection with reports of the vehicle being operated in a reckless manner. The suspect engaged Lafourche Parish deputies in a pursuit situation which headed north towards Labadieville. As the suspect entered Assumption Parish, he collided with the Assumption Sheriff’s patrol unit. That collision sent both the suspect Donavar Yancy, Jr. and the Assumption deputy to hospitals with minor injuries.
Donavar Yancy, Jr. was released from the hospital and booked into the Lafourche Parish Jail.
Donavar Yancy, Jr. was released to the custody of the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, and booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on charges of:
*Attempted First Degree Murder of a Police Officer – 2 Counts
*Aggravated Flight from an Officer
*Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence
*Possession of Alcoholic Beverages in a Motor Vehicle
*No Liability Insurance
Donavar Yancy, Jr. remains incarcerated pending a bond hearing.
