Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced that one student has been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into an incident involving students at Sixth Ward Middle School.
Detectives began investigating on August 26, 2025, after receiving reports that several male students had shared digitally altered, explicit photos of female classmates. The images were determined to have been created using artificial intelligence and were reportedly circulated among students both on a school bus and on campus.
The situation led to an altercation between one of the male students and one of the female students involved. Following the investigation, detectives charged a male student on September 15, 2025, with ten counts of Unlawful Dissemination of Images Created by Artificial Intelligence (R.S. 14:73.14). Sheriff Webre noted that the investigation remains active and that additional arrests or charges are possible.
“After the incident was publicized at last week’s Lafourche Parish School Board meeting, we felt it was important to provide an update,” said Sheriff Webre. “Investigations involving advanced technology and social media can take weeks or even months to fully process, as digital evidence must be properly obtained and reviewed. Our detectives are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.”
Sheriff Webre confirmed that the female student involved in the bus altercation will not face criminal charges. “Given the totality of the circumstances, we chose not to pursue charges against her,” he said. “While photo manipulation has existed for years, A.I. tools now make it easy for anyone to create or alter images without technical skill. This case underscores a serious issue that parents must discuss with their children — the dangers and consequences of misusing artificial intelligence.”
