High Speed Chase in New Iberia Leads to One Arrest

On October 6th, while conducting traffic enforcement in school zones, deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office observed a black motorcycle without a license plate, carrying two individuals, both without helmets.

When deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over. The motorcycle fled at speeds exceeding 90 mph, traveling through multiple school zones, running several red lights and stop signs.

The pursuit ended in the 600 block of Dugas Road when the motorcycle crashed. The driver, 23 year old Jayden Smith, and his female passenger were apprehended. Deputies later learned the motorcycle had been reported stolen out of St. Martinville.

The passenger was cited for no helmet and transported to Iberia Medical Center for evaluation. Smith was also transported to Iberia Medical Center with minor injuries and later booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on the following charges:

La. R.S. 32:190 No Helmet

La. R.S. 40:1023.C Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
