ST. MARY PARISH, La. — A Franklin man initially identified as a suspect in an armed robbery investigation is now facing additional felony charges related to dogfighting and aggravated animal cruelty, authorities said.
Jermain Lavone Spain, 41, was first developed as a suspect in an armed robbery that occurred at a business in Verdunville on December 10, 2025. During the course of that investigation, detectives learned Spain was keeping several pit bull dogs at a parish residence.
On January 22, 2026, investigators executed search warrants at residences in Centerville and Verdunville. Authorities seized nine dogs from one of the locations. Spain was also found in possession of approximately 88 grams of marijuana, THC capsules, and drug paraphernalia. During questioning, he reportedly admitted to selling narcotics.
Spain was booked into the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on charges including:
Armed Robbery
Pit Bull Violation (9 counts)
Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute (2 counts)
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
He later bonded out as the investigation continued.
Following a forensic examination of Spain’s cellphone, detectives reportedly discovered videos and images allegedly depicting dogfighting activity, including injured and deceased animals.
On February 3, 2026, Spain was taken back into custody during a traffic stop and rebooked on charges of dogfighting and aggravated animal cruelty.
His bond has been set at $235,000. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
