LAFOURCHE PARISH, La. — According to Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Weber, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a helicopter crash that happened in Thibodaux on Wednesday, July 23. Sheriff Weber confirmed the pilot has died as a result of their injuries.
The crash happened about a mile off on Louisiana Highway 308 in Thibodaux, just south of Laurel Valley in a sugar cane field.
The pilot of the helicopter was reportedly in their 60s and was in the process of spraying the field when the crash happened.
“It appears that there was some interaction between the helicopter and a utility line. And it caused the aircraft to crash,” said Lafourche Parish President Archie Chassion.
It has been confirmed that the helicopter belonged to JBI Helicopter Services in Abbeville, La.
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre says the pilot was not working alone and said in recent years, Lafourche Parish has had its share of aircraft crashes. In this case, the pilot was spraying a sugar cane field, something he says is normal during this time of year.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the crash.
