PIERRE PART – An investigation into the October 16, 2025, deputy-involved shooting in Assumption Parish has led to an arrest warrant for 60-year-old Paul Blanchard of Pierre Part.

According to investigators, the incident began when Blanchard confronted a man performing lawn care work at a residence, during which he made racially charged remarks before leaving. A short time later, Blanchard allegedly returned armed with a shotgun and opened fire, striking the victim. The victim ran inside the home for safety as Blanchard followed while still armed. Three additional occupants, including a juvenile, were inside the residence at the time. Blanchard then fled the scene.

Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon and deputies with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) responded to reports of the shooting. Upon arrival, the Falcon and a deputy located the injured victim. While searching the area for the suspect, they encountered Blanchard nearby. During that confrontation, Blanchard reportedly fired a shotgun toward the Falcon, grazing him. The deputy then discharged their service weapon, striking Blanchard.

Both Blanchard and the original shooting victim were transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Falcon sustained minor wounds, and the deputy was unharmed.

Blanchard remains hospitalized and will be booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center once medically cleared. Detectives have obtained an arrest warrant through the 23rd Judicial District Court charging Blanchard with:

Two counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder (LA R.S. 14:27/30)

Three counts of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm (LA R.S. 14:37.4)

Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer (LA R.S. 14:37.2)

Hate Crimes (LA R.S. 14:107.2)

Aggravated Burglary (LA R.S. 14:60)

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional updates will be released in coordination with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

In a statement, the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office said it requested the Louisiana State Police to conduct an independent investigation. Sheriff Leland Falcon expressed confidence that the LSP inquiry will be “thorough, precise, and impartial,” and that findings will be submitted to District Attorney Ricky Babin’s office for review and prosecution. Falcon added that he trusts the DA’s office “will ensure justice is served for all parties affected by this incident.”state policestate police
