Patterson Police Chief Garret Grogan says he has handed over the investigation of a recent arrest by two of his officers to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office. A video showing the arrest during a traffic stop that occurred Friday, June 26, 2026 quickly went viral.  The video shows a struggle between the officers and the suspect before he was forcefully taken to the ground and placed into custody resulting in injuries to the suspect, although the suspect refused medical attention.

48-year-old Jevon R. Smith was booked on the charges of Stop Sign Violation, Resisting an Officer and Disturbing the Peace by language and released on a summons.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Grogan requested an independent review. Grogan said he submitted the request on Tuesday, June 30.

In an exclusive interview with KQKI News the day following the arrest, Patterson Police Chief Garrett Grogan said he reviewed the officers’ body camera footage. According to Grogan, the suspect had been refusing to cooperate with officers several minutes before the viral video was recorded.
