A large grass fire Monday afternoon on Alice B Road at the Port of West St. Mary resulted in seven fire departments responding to extinguish the fire. The initial call to the St. Mary District 11 Fire Department was received at 4:16 pm with mutual aid requested from Chitimacha, Baldwin, Jeanerette, Grand Marais, Iberia Parish BOM and Cypremort Point Fire Departments.
District 11 Fire Chief Clarence Clark told KQKI News that someone set the grass on fire in a dry area and high winds caused the fire to spread. He said that it took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to extinguish the fire who were able to stop it from spreading to a nearby mobile home and shed. Clark said there were no injuries reported. Acadian Ambulance and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
