Two Texas men were cited Sept. 30 after Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents allegedly observed them harvesting oysters from a closed area south of Marsh Island in Iberia Parish.
Antonio Ayala Gonzales, 53, of Dickinson, and Gregorio Soto Rivas, 53, of San Leon, were each cited for taking oysters from a polluted area.
According to LDWF, agents observed the men actively harvesting in waters closed by the Louisiana Department of Health due to pollution concerns. After stopping their vessel, agents found 180 sacks of oysters allegedly harvested from the closed area.
Agents seized the oysters and returned them to the water.
The violation carries a fine of $900 to $950 and up to 120 days in jail.
