On Saturday March 25th at approximately 4:51pm, the Berwick Police Department received a call of shots fired in the 700 block of Utah Street. Upon arrival of the first officers, they quickly learned that a verbal altercation took place at a residence in which a large family gathering was taking place. During the course of the investigation, it was learned that individuals at the gathering reportedly had a verbal altercation with another group of subjects that were walking in the area of the railroad tracks.
At some point during the verbal altercation, one of the subjects in the group on the railroad tracks allegedly pulled out a handgun and began to discharge the firearm in the direction of the gathering. No one was struck by the gunfire, however it was later learned that a mobile home, which was occupied at the time, was struck by gunfire.
Through investigative means, investigators gathered information which identified a 16-year-old black male as the alleged shooter. Investigators later obtained two search warrants for residences in the Berwick area. With the assistance of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office and Morgan City Police Department, the search warrants were executed simultaneously without incident.
During the course of the search warrants, investigators located the 16-year-old male suspect at one location and also located a firearm that is believed to have been used in the crime at the other residence.
While executing one of the search warrants, a 17-year-old female was reportedly observed discarding a bag out of a rear window which was recovered and learned to contain the firearm.
After gathering evidence that linked both juveniles to the crime, warrants were prepared and they were later placed under arrest for the charges.
