THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls State University will host an exhibit from the National World War II Museum that examines Louisiana’s contribution to the second world war.

The exhibit, titled “The Pelican State Goes to War,” will be held through Dec. 15 in the archives of Ellender Memorial Library. The traveling exhibit will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“The exhibit details Louisiana’s participation and war efforts during World War II,” said Clifton Theriot, archivist and assistant library director. “It is important for current Louisianians to know about their ancestors’ contributions toward supporting and ultimately winning the war. What makes this exhibit unique is that it highlights not only the contributions of Louisiana soldiers but of the workers and the Louisiana factories as well.”

Dr. Paul Wilson, history department head, said the exhibit is great for historians, folks with an interest in World War II and area public schools.

“The Pelican State exhibit is a great opportunity for students and residents of the Bayou Region to learn about the significant contributions made by our state to the overall Allied victory in World War II,” Dr. Wilson said. “Our state punched above its weight, so to speak, and residents of Louisiana had a profound impact on the American war effort. The war also had a major impact on Louisiana. It took us out of the Great Depression and began a period that ushered in an era when the Pelican State became more urbanized and modernized, especially economically.”

The tour is self-guided, but student tour guides are available upon request.
