St. Mary Parish Voters approved several tax propositions on Saturday, including one in Hospital Service District No. 2, which is a 9 mill, 10 year property tax that is expected to generate approximately $32 million over 10 years to fund maintenance, improvements, recruitment of doctors and staffing at Ochsner St. Mary Hospital in Morgan City. Hospital Service District No. 2 runs from the Calumet Cut through Amelia.
In Baldwin and Franklin, voters approved a 1 cent sales tax for public safety including police and fire protection. Officials say the tax will fund the hiring of additional police officers and firefighters, purchasing of new police units and fire trucks, training and equipment upgrades.
Voters also approved several tax renewals for the Law Enforcement Sub-District No. 1, Consolidated School Districts 2 & 3 and Sixth Ward Special School District No. 3, as well as Consolidated Gravity District No. 1.
