During the May 9, 2024, St. Mary Parish School Board meeting, the members of the board
voted to support a lawsuit challenging new Title IX regulations that has been initiated by the
Louisiana Department of Education and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murril. The lawsuit
argues that new regulations could interfere with Louisiana’s state laws that ban the use of
bathrooms and locker rooms when it comes to biological gender. Participation in gender-
based sports teams is also a concern.
While 17 Louisiana school districts have joined the lawsuit with the LDOE and the Attorney
General, the timeline to be listed in the original lawsuit was not possible within the two-day
notification received. The St. Mary Parish School Board adopted the resolution of support so
that any possible opportunities to join the case will remain open.
The St. Mary Parish School Board believes that it is the obligation of the system to protect all
students and their right to a safe and healthy school environment. However, it is felt that the
new Title IX changes are contrary to federal and state law and will be damaging to our school
families and community.
