Small Grass Fire Extinguished Near Garden City Overpass, Despite Reports of Fire Near Law Enforcement Center

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office has clarified the location of a Friday afternoon grass fire on Highway 90. At approximately 2:41 pm, Franklin Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire on the highway. While it was reported on social media that the fire was located near the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, the Sheriff’s Office released a photo to KQKI News that showed a small burn area near the Garden City Overpass, which is farther down from the LEC.

In a statement, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office said, “We have received that question several times during the past hour, so let us put your mind at ease. The photo is a picture of the burn area which was near the Garden City Overpass. At no time did the fire approach the LEC, nor were our inmates and staff at the LEC in any danger. BUT, with that being said, you can see how a cigarette thrown out of a vehicle or some other means of fire can really get going with everything so dry.”
