No injuries were reported to either the employees or animals as a result of a Thursday morning fire at Steve’s Pet Shop in Bayou Vista. At 10:05 am, the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at the store. The first unit arrived on the scene at 10:09 am and reported smoke showing from the front of the building. The store, along with the business next door, was evacuated.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and began to remove smoke from the building by opening the rear doors and placed several fans for additional ventilation.  It was determined that the cause of the fire was an electrical issue which started behind the aquarium racks. The fire was contained to the area of orgin.

All of the animals that were in the store at the time showed no signs of being affected by the smoke and were evacuated by store employees and firefighters once the fire was brought under control.

Two BVVFD engines, a chief’s unit and nine personnel responded to the scene. Also assisting were the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, Acadian Ambulance and CLECO.
