In the aftermath of a massive multi-vehicle crash on I-55, troopers, first responders, Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) workers, and tow companies have been working nonstop since yesterday morning to investigate and clear the scene. The death toll has risen to eight individuals as another victim succumbed to their injuries in a local hospital during the night. So far, investigators have determined that at least 168 vehicles were involved in the accident, resulting in 63 people sustaining injuries.
By late Tuesday afternoon, all vehicles trapped in both directions of I-55 had been removed, and DOTD began cleaning up the wreckage-strewn roadway. Bridge inspectors are currently assessing potential damages to the structure at multiple locations. Once debris, diesel fuel, and chemicals have been fully cleared from the bridge surface, a comprehensive structural evaluation will ensue.
It is anticipated that a testing consultant may start conducting bridge deck scans tonight to gather more information on the extent of damage to the concrete surface. Based on these findings, the scope of necessary repairs will be determined. In conjunction with Louisiana State Police (LSP) and DOTD personnel, a strategic plan for road reopening will be devised, contingent upon inspection results.
In the meantime, troopers are ensuring that all vehicles involved in the accident are appropriately registered and that their occupants are accounted for. Drivers and vehicle owners seeking information on towed vehicles can contact Troop B via email at TroopB@la.gov. To collect personal belongings or vehicles from tow yards, owners must present appropriate proof of ownership to the respective tow companies.
