On Tuesday morning just before 8:00 am, the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department and St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Bayou Vista Elementary School in reference to the smell of smoke in the building. The Berwick Volunteer Fire Department was then dispatched for mutual aid.

According to Fallon Mitchell, a spokeswoman for St. Mary Parish Schools, told KQKI News that the cause of the smell was a burnt switch.  She said all precautionary measures were taken and there was no need for concern.  Fallon further stated that students and staff were not evacuated.  She added that district maintenance personnel are en route to address the situation.
