Berwick, LA – A Berwick man was arrested Monday morning following a standoff with police that began when officers responded to a call of a suicidal subject at a residence on Ehrlich Street.
Aydan Rhodes, 18, was taken into custody just after 9:52 a.m. on charges including three counts of attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The incident began when officers arrived at the residence around 9:45 a.m. and found Rhodes armed with a shotgun pointed at them. Despite orders to drop the weapon, Rhodes threatened to kill the officers and made statements for them to kill him.
Negotiations with Rhodes proved unsuccessful, and after a single shot was fired in the officers’ direction, additional assistance was called in from outside agencies. A family member inside the residence disobeyed police commands and entered the room to confront Rhodes, successfully wrestling the gun away from him.
Rhodes was then disarmed of the shotgun but became armed with a large knife. Officers ordered him to drop the knife, which he eventually complied with. Rhodes was taken into custody without further incident.
Chief Leonard commended the officers for their restraint in not using deadly force and thanked the Morgan City Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during the investigation.
