The City of Berwick has announced an adjustment in trash pick-up rates as a result of increased costs from their contractor, Pelican. The garbage collection charge will see a $3 increase, bringing the new rate to $22.50. This change is not intended to burden residents but is necessary due to the rate increase imposed by Pelican.
The last rate increment occurred on May 1st, 2022. Berwick currently operates under a master contract with St. Mary Parish in order to secure the most affordable rates possible for their residents. The rate increases are primarily attributed to the tipping fees levied on Pelican by the parish.
Initially, the contract cost was approximately $15-$16; however, annual increases have occurred since then. The new rate of $22.50 will become effective on August 1st, 2023, as approved by Resolution 15-23.
