Bayou Vista Fire Chief Gerald Price tells KQKI News that it was an active weekend for his firefighters. As reported by KQKI News, the first call came in on Friday afternoon with a brush fire on hunting property near Cotten Road in Patterson. Firefighters from Bayou Vista and Patterson attempted to gain access by boat, but determined the fire would eventually burn itself out and there was no threat to the public.
As fire crews were wrapping up that call, they were then dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 90 near Walmart at approximately 3:40 pm Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a medical call as well as a house fire. Price said they responded to the 1100 block of Teche Road for the report of a structure fire. Upon arrival of the first unit, smoke was was showing from the rear of the home. The fire was located under the back patio and into the attic of the home. However, it was quickly extinguished by fire department personnel. The homeowner was able to quickly work to extinguish most of the flames with a garden hose until firefighters arrived. BVFD responded with two engines, one ladder truck, one service truck and 22 firefighters. The cause was undetermined.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Bayou Vista firefighters assisted the Morgan City Fire Department with a fatal accident on Highway 90 near the MLK Blvd. exit. The three-vehicle accident claimed two lives and injured several victims, including one who was transported by Acadian Air Med.
