A Bayou Vista house is a total loss after a major fire on Friday afternoon. Just before 2:00 p.m., the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the 1200 block of Teche Road in reference to a working structure fire. Moments later, Berwick, Patterson and Morgan City Fire Departments were dispatched to provide mutual aid assistance.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a single-story residence that was fully engulfed in flames. Due to the intensity of the fire, neighboring homes on both sides of the structure were being threatened by extreme heat and radiant exposure, with fire beginning to extend to adjacent properties.
Fire crews immediately deployed hose lines to protect the neighboring residences while additional firefighters advanced attack lines to initiate an aggressive interior fire suppression operation. Through the coordinated efforts of all responding agencies, crews successfully contained the fire and prevented further spread to surrounding structures.
Several of the photographs below were captured by helmet-mounted cameras worn by Berwick firefighters, offering a firsthand perspective of the dangerous conditions and challenges firefighters face while battling structure fires.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department and the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
