Armed Robbery Suspect Shot by Store Clerk In Custody

According to the New Iberia Police Department, a suspect is now in custody charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Eric James Francis, 57, has been arrested and booked into the Iberia Parish Jail.
At about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the New Iberia Police Department received a call about a shooting at a convenience store located in the 200 block of Center Street.
Officers responded to the location and, upon arriving, located Francis with at least one gunshot wound. He was transported by Acadian Ambulance to a local hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Lafayette.
Detectives responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Francis entered the store armed with a cutting instrument. Francis walked around the counter and attempted to rob the store clerk. During the robbery, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the Francis was shot by the store clerk.
This investigation is ongoing.
