PIERRE PART, LA — On Saturday, May 10, the Pierre Part Fire Department responded to a dumpster fire behind the Pierre Part Store that quickly turned dangerous when an explosion erupted as firefighters approached the scene.

The explosion, which was reportedly heard from nearly a mile away, occurred moments after the first firefighters arrived and began investigating the source of the fire. Following the blast, responders immediately retreated and awaited additional support.

Engine 45 arrived on scene just three minutes after the initial alert was issued. Firefighters then suited up in full protective gear and successfully extinguished the blaze.

A post-incident investigation revealed several hazardous items had been discarded in the dumpster, including multiple aerosol cans and a couple of propane bottles — items known to be highly combustible under heat.

One firefighter sustained injuries during the retreat, tripping and suffering abrasions to both knees. She was treated for her injuries.

The Pierre Part Fire Department reminds the public that dumpsters can contain dangerous materials and pose serious safety risks. “Please exercise caution regarding the items disposed of in dumpsters, particularly when they are not your own,” the department stated. “And always wear your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”

Authorities are urging residents to dispose of hazardous items properly and to avoid throwing pressurized containers or flammable materials into dumpsters. The incident remains under review.
