The Port of Morgan City is moving forward with a major expansion of its marine terminal after recently awarding Sea Level Construction a contract for the West Dock Expansion Project.
The project will expand the Port’s marine terminal to approximately 1,900 feet of waterfront access and 35 acres of laydown and storage space. The expanded dock will be designed to support loads of up to 1,000 pounds per square foot and provide a berth depth of 20 feet.
The expansion will include approximately 2.88 acres of concrete laydown and transit area, along with an 804-foot-long by 80-foot-wide pile-supported concrete wharf.
The Port has also made significant investments in new cargo-handling equipment, including a 275-ton Manitowoc crane, a 25-ton Taylor forklift and related cargo-transloading equipment.
Those purchases were supported by a $3.2 million Fiscal Year 2023 U.S. Marine Highways Program award from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration, or MARAD. The Port provided a local cost share of $869,879.17.
MARAD also awarded the Port $772,800 in Fiscal Year 2025 funding for additional cargo-transloading equipment. Plans include the purchase of a new 80-ton rough-terrain crane, a 3,500-pound-capacity track steer loader and related cargo-handling attachments. The Port will contribute an additional $193,200 in local funding.
Located at 800 Youngs Road in Morgan City along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, the Port’s marine terminal serves as a regional transportation hub with access to multiple waterways and highways. On-site rail spurs connect the terminal to the national rail network, and the facility is also located near a commercial airport.
The terminal includes a 20,000-square-foot warehouse equipped with security and fire-suppression systems near its rail access. The Port is also seeking funding for an additional 35,000-square-foot warehouse to accommodate future clients.
